SAGES aspires to be the driving force in gastroenterology in South Africa and to contribute constructively to the development of the discipline on the African continent, with the primary aim of improving the health of those suffering from disease of the gastrointestinal tract. It therefore wishes to assume a dominant role in the region for the generation and dissemination of scientific knowledge, which serves as the intellectual basis for gastroenterology. It strives to enhance the status of gastroenterology as a discipline, while promoting high standards of professionalism of gastroenterologists. It recognises the need to foster intellectual and social diversity within the society.
